I recently had an opportunity to help a local church that had the dreadful task of laying off staff. My job was to hold a workshop orientation on how to do a professional job search in today’s market. When you work for a church or religious organization, even when you are not in the clergy, it feels like you are doing God’s work. Many people pour their heart and soul into helping the congregation.

I recently had the pleasure of attending a job search lecture from Dick Bolles, the author of “What Color is Your Parachute – 2011” at a local Northern California Church. Many people that have had to look for a job over the past 30+ years remember “What Color is Your Parachute” as a very significant book that basically taught us all about job searches. What most people don’t know is that Dick updates his book every year to keep it current with the times. And believe me, he keeps up with the times far better than most of us. Dick Bolles’ top three tips for job seekers over 50 are:

Some basics of interviewing come naturally for the mature worker. Some does not. This article is unacknowledges our fear of the situation. The sabotaging fear that we are going to do badly can lead us to fulfill this unacknowledged fear. Then the problem deepens because the fear and the outcome confirm the expectation.

Making a list of your top accomplishments is required if you are going to interview well. It also rebuilds your self-esteem as you recall the many achievements you have had through out your life.

Using Linkedin to get interviews at your targeted organization is an advanced job network building technique when you are certain that you want to work for the organization and it will be a good fit for your career plan.

Most job seekers use the internet to search for jobs that meet the goals of their career plan. But most jobs are never posted on the internet. Job seekers need to learn how to effectively job network their way into targeted organizations that have job positions that they are qualified to fill.

Last night I had the privilege of listening to Dick Bolles speak about the difference in doing a basic job search and a sophisticated job search. Dick was speaking to a group at Christ the King parish in Pleasant Hill, CA on the topic, “How to Find Hope and Rewarding Work, Even When There Are No Jobs”, based on his book “The Job Hunter’s Survival Guide.”

Type 9 of the nine Enneagram social styles has an uncomplicated view of life. For the Nine each day is sufficient unto itself. Nines are grounded and peaceful; if a friend is in need the Nine will drop everything and rush to their friend’s side. Often the Nine will neglect their own needs to minister to the needs of others. Procrastination is the biggest weakness for a Nine when conducting a job search.

Type 8 of the nine Enneagram social styles gets his or her energy by confrontation. Sometimes called “The Boss”, Eights need to dominate or avoid being dominated. Eights are good at taking the initiative to move forward; they like being in charge. Working with Eights can be intimidating even for the coach. It helps to understand that Eights are at their core, fair people, and they don’t intentionally intimidate people. They like dealing with the truth. No sugar coating, please. And most of all, Eights are principled individuals. They will protect the weak and fight injustice. Eights have big hearts under that gruff exterior.
