The curious case of William P. - Part 07
September 01, 2010 by Gene Nokes
Stage 1 – On the Verge of a Professional Job Search

William is happy.

Gene Nokes - Career Coaching, Helping self by helping othersThere is a decided change in his demeanor. He is making progress. He is getting to the doctor appointments at the VA hospital thanks to Chuck. His hearing may not be that bad at all. He is scheduled to have his ears flushed of wax build up.

He has been working part-time without health benefits for 5 years and he has a lot of issues. He has cataracts which are treatable and he is scheduled for eye surgery next week. He needs dental work and some minor surgery. It appears all of this will be covered by the VA.

Bill may even qualify for a disability pension, but I digress.

Let’s talk about Bill’s contribution to society by using his God given talent and earned education; a Master’s in Microbiology. I have located a volunteer job for Bill at the Center for Adaptive Learning (http://www.centerforadaptivelearning.org/). This is a place where he can help others while helping himself.

He really likes the idea of teaching, because he often had to teach new microbiologists. He also had to present technical material to his colleagues and symposiums. This work is not in his chosen profession, but it will help him to sharpen his interpersonal skills. It is a far cry from the work he has been doing as a check out clerk at the hardware store. He will be working one or two days a week.

He has also found a room to rent in a house that is being renovated. A friend of his will be living in the same home, so a decent place to rest and companionship. Things are looking up for William P.

Everyone has value. William P, you, me, we all have value. We are at our best when we give of ourselves to help others, especially those most in need.

I'm Glad to hear that William seems to be doing better. Do you really think he can teach?
