The curious case of William P. - Part 08
October 02, 2010 by Gene Nokes

Stage 1 – On the Verge of a Professional Job Search

William is now wearing his hearing aid daily for as many as 12 hours. People that know that I am coaching him report that he is much more conversant. William can now interview and converse with people.

Winning a sales contest – Good job, William

William even won a sales contest at work and is the employee of the month. He has earned a day off with pay. This is quite a change for William. He is ready for a volunteer job as a Microbiologist.

In my opinion William has been out of his profession too long just to jump into interviewing without refreshing his experience. In California, people like William that want to volunteer as a strategic move can volunteer through an organization that caters to the mature worker. The Know How Network acts like a match maker for people willing to donate their skills to non-profit organizations (www.knowhownetwork.org).

Microbiologist targets a volunteer job in clean air and water

Stage 1 for William will be to begin targeting non-profit organizations specializing in environmental issues with air and water. His target geography is the Tri-Valley area or a 20 mile radius from Dublin, CA. William has a reliable car, so driving is not a problem. He can volunteer to work any day of the week, because he is single and would welcome meaningful work even on the weekends.

William started the process by submitting his enrollment form on-line and submitting an updated resume. The Know How Network is limited to Contra Costa County, so we will use their help to locate organizations in Alameda County.

Restored hearing opens the door to career work

William has finally moved out of Stage Zero in his job search. Stage 1 begins when the job seeker begins to target companies or organizations that have the job position that is being sought. Targeting helps the job seeker to create options for themselves rather than passively waiting for job postings or waiting for someone to discover their resume posted on-line.

William has to put that new hearing aid to use by actively contacting these target organizations by phone and in person.
