Many of us were taught very early in our careers that it is a good idea to save 10% of our income for a rainy day. Others were taught that it is always necessary to maintain savings of at least six months of income. I was surprised to read in a San Jose Mercury News article earlier this week that 24% of unemployed workers polled actually had a minimum of six months of salary in place when they lost their jobs. This figure surprised me because I expected this figure to be much lower than that. Department of labor statistics now estimate the average time necessary for a 50 year old to find a new job is 51 weeks. There isn’t much we can do to change our economic challenges of today, but hopefully all of you will look into a budget that plans for a rainy day after finding that next job. Our economy has continually demonstrated that we don’t learn from history. The stock market gets artificially inflated and we expect the good times will never end. Real estate values skyrocket and we trust that property values are our security blanket. Friends, the cold truth is that many of us have paid a huge price because of our faith in economic realities that were anything but.
