Awake and Dreamin'…Working on a Dream
August 17, 2011 by Patrice Payne
I'm wide awake and still dreaming; dreaming of finding work, that is! Every day the news sends mixed messages about employment or unemployment. Just yesterday, I heard that job seekers can find solace in a temporary position because job shops have plenty of jobs available if you can work on a temporary basis. Employees can find satisfaction in working for new employers every three months or so and that can be exciting during such trying times. It also allows you to be non-committal to a point because you are aware that the position you hold is most likely temporary but with the chance of becoming permanent if you work out and if it's what you want. On the other hand, unemployment looms over some of us who were laid off from the desirable jobs we once held. Let me be totally honest about this (as always). The job I held was desirable primarily due to the fact that it paid a decent wage and held a wheelbarrow of benefits. When I joined on, I signed up for everything they offered! Of course, I went in thinking that this job would be the last job I'd ever hold. Having held a string of jobs in the past that only had a wage attached to them and no personal satisfaction intact, I expected nothing much more than a nice paycheck. I got no more than I expected. The only enjoyable part of my former position was making friends with coworkers and collecting my bi-weekly stipend.Being inventive can soothe unemployment
Recently, I met other women who were also unemployed but still managed to smile. Why? They became inventive! It seems that there's a free website where people can post items for sale and other people respond and you make money. What a concept. So, on any given day, they traverse from neighborhood to neighborhood in search of resalable yar
d sale treasures. Remember that couch you bought from a friend as a favor that now sits in your garage? Post it and watch it sell; call it re-gifting in the computer age. Another pet-loving friend of mine decided to walk other people’s dogs along with her own and a small business was born. In fact, I was thinking: I’ve got some great stories to tell about my infamous-never-before-told past and I already have a file box full of unfinished-novels-in-waiting. Do you think if I published them on the computer, they’d sell? I’d better keep writing and working while I’m still dreaming!
