Where Have All The Workers Gone?

I am often asked what motivated me to co-found OurExperienceCounts. I had spent the last twenty years of my career as a semiconductor executive and had announced my retirement. I now believe that Paul Wiseman, a writer for the associated press has answered that question far more eloquently than I ever could. Last week he wrote an article titled, “Out of site, out of mind as more workers quit.” His opening sentence reads, “Where did all the workers go? 

His article points out, that in the last three months alone, more than 500,000 workers have given up looking for work. Conveniently, our federal government drops them from the unemployment figures, thus painting a rosy picture. What makes this even more disconcerting is the fact that 700,000 new jobs were added to the economy during that same period.  Get the picture?  Boomers need special help that’s not available through traditional support resources and without being trained to compete with younger applicants, their success in finding work is much more difficult for some and impossible for others.

The co-founders and staff at OurExperienceCounts.com seek to fill that void and provide the answers that give the millions of Boomers that have given up the confidence to try again. I have heard that the plight of older unemployed workers is, “the elephant in the room that no-one wants to talk about,” but the team of dedicated professionals at OurExperienceCounts.com talks about nothing else. I believe that the opportunity to impact this issue was a great reason to postpone my retirement.
