Career Development Plan Can Go from High to Low
June 01, 2011 by Patrice Payne
Career Development Plan Can Go from High to Low
Your career development plan can go from high to low in less than one day. Did you know? The state of California has both the highest point in the continental U.S., Mt. Whitney at 14,494 feet, to its lowest point, Badwater in Death Valley, 282 feet below sea level. While that may be a “fun fact” here is a sad stat for those seeking to develop a career plan: Nevada continued to register the highest unemployment rate among the states, 13.6 percent in February 2011 and here where I live, California, came in a close second at 12.2 percent. You can actually travel from a place called “Furnace Creek” in the valley (aptly named for a record high temperature of 134°) to the peak of Mt. Whitney, that lies only 84.6 miles away, in less than one day!Career Plan Gains and Losses
Can you change the direction of your career development plan in less than one day? The largest over-the-month statistically significant job gains occurred in California (+96,500). It is the opinion of some, however, that although many now have jobs that were created rather quickly, if given the chance, they’d trade in that job for a career of choice in a second! One day while listening to “talk radio”, a man called in response to the quip, ‘it doesn’t take a brain surgeon to flip burgers...’ Well, he actually was a neuroscientist working as line cook in a fast-food burger joint. Tired of barking at the mailman for his unemployment check, he instead, reinvented his resume, sharpened his interviewing skills, dismissed his over-qualifications and aced the job interview questions and answers session. I could totally relate to his strategy, because I did the exact same thing.
Career Development Plan Takes on New Shape
After suffering through the loss of my former job, I gained a minimum wage job and embarked on a new journey with brand new career ideas and a fresh career development plan—on the same day! I am currently enrolled in an online course that will culminate in successfully reaching my new career goal. So, even if you find yourself at low point in your job-related career, forge ahead! Use the same website I did, ourexperiencecounts.com for resume tips, to build a job network or explore new career ideas, and create the path to your career “high”.
