Interviewing and Stress: Know Yourself

Managing stress is one of the most important and most neglected aspects to think about as you pursue the next steps in your career plan. Knowing how stress is likely to impact you can point to important strategies you can use to improve your performance during an interview.Are you more likely to you feel hyped and jittery, or drained and sluggish when you’re feeling stressed? Do you become excessively talkative, or do you nearly lose the power of speech? People who feel hyped and jittery when they’re stressed might want to skip that cup of coffee before their interview, while those who feel drained and sluggish might want to pour an extra cup. And people who get really quiet in stressful situations can manage this reaction by taking a little extra time before the interview to remind themselves of some good examples of work experience they can talk about during the interview. Those who know they’re likely to become a little too chatty under the impacts of stress can keep in mind that an interview is an interaction between the interviewee and the interviewer. They can remember to watch and respond to body language and other cues from their interviewers—especially the cues that tell them they’ve said enough.
Most importantly, remember that whatever the impacts of stress on you, the more prepared you FEEL, the less stressed you’re likely to be and, therefore, the less impact stress will have on you.
