Dear Cher:
I keep hearing about ourexperiencecounts.com? What’s so special about your website? How does it differ from other sites directed at more experienced workers?
Dominic L, Albany, NY
Answer:
Dear Dominic:
Thanks for noticing our site is special! We think so, too. The major reason is that this website was conceived and built with only the needs and concerns of experienced workers in mind. It did not start out with another mission and then try to make it fit for this demographic group. The major issue as we grew the content, blogs and training for ourexperiencecounts.com was always “What are the immediate needs of “displaced” career men and women like us?”The founders of the website met because we, ourselves, were looking to define our own futures. We had joined an excellent program for transitioning workers funded by the state of California. As we looked around, we found many, many others in the same process. The need for assistance was burgeoning and the resources were limited. We were right in the middle of a whole demographic that seemed to be particularly caught off guard by their situations. They were ourselves, our colleagues and our friends who were struggling to deal with the loss of retirement funds, loss of work income and the loss of the futures we had envisioned for ourselves. So many very capable people were “gobsmacked” by the sudden changes in their lives. They needed easy access to current, successful, techniques to map out and attain a healthy fulfilling future for themselves.
We were hooked. As a team, we felt compelled to share what we knew. Our colleagues needed coaching about building effective resumes that wouldn’t cost three figures and only worked for one target. Our first goal was to provide training that was clear, concise, and free or low cost, to give each user the power to become his or her own best career coach. The other practical goal was to build a site where everyone could ask the questions that puzzled, scared them, or daunted their enthusiasm for the task at hand; a site specifically developed to give our colleagues access to the kind of specific, attention grabbing materials and information they can use.
With ourexperiencecounts.com now online, we look forward to it becoming a community where we can all share the pieces of the puzzle we know best. I am glad you will be a part of that community.
Best, Cher
