Out of Work, But Giving Back
April 22, 2011 by Marilyn Degodny Winters
It’s time to contribute. While walking in the park with my brother-in-law he asked me when I was going to start to give back to the community. I have been out of work for three and a half months now. I’ve had time to accept that due to my health issues I will not be a member of the workforce. Now I have to think about  other things to do with my time that will be meaningful.  I have thought about volunteering, but up until now I just was not emotionally ready to commit to helping others when I was still trying to figure out how to help myself. Plus, I have a limited amount of energy that can be expended so that will impact what I am able to do. I never know what I am able to handle when the day begins, so I would hate to commit to something and not be able to perform what is asked of me.

Volunteer work opportunities?

I started looking at projects that will soon be occurring in my community in preparation for the upcoming holiday season. Food pantries need supplies; shelters need clothing and toiletries, would these be activities that I would be able to do?  What about after the holidays? Where could I help others and make the best use of my talents? I decided to start to research what volunteer opportunities are available in my area and one immediately caught my eye.

Put the dog to work

Share-A-Pet is an organization that evaluates then trains you and your dog to be therapy partners. You go into hospitals, nursing homes, senior centers, etc. to provide the wonderful benefits of pet therapy to those that could use a little love and companionship. I know that I have the skills necessary to take on the job, but would DeeJay? He has always been a housedog. Does he have what it takes? I am going to call next week to schedule an appointment. Then we will see if this is the right opportunity. What could be better than spending time with your dog and helping others, too?
