Tip of the Week - Use Recruiters Wisely
December 03, 2010 by David Goldstein
Recruiters, in a job search, can be one of two things; a major waste of time and effort, or quickest route back to a salary. Which they are for you is strictly up to you – based on how you use them. Before continuing, I am going to break recruiters into two categories, those that recruit for permanent positions, and those that recruit for contract or temporary positions. In both cases, remember, the recruiter will make money only if they place you, and if they can’t place you, they will not have much of an interest in working with you. Having said all of that, here are a couple of rules as a job seeker you should use when trying to work with recruiters:
·        Work with recruiters that specialize in the industries and levels that you qualify for. There is no point contacting a recruiter who specializes in executive level management if that is not you.
·        Work with recruiters you like. There are enough of them out there, so if you don’t feel comfortable with one, move on to the next one.
·        Work with a limited number of recruiters. Don’t contact everyone that you find. Many recruiters often recruit for the same position, so don’t use the shotgun approach. .
·        Understand how the recruiter thinks, and you will be able to work better with them. A good place to start is our series of posts by Deb McClanahan, “Why Won’t the Headhunter Return My Calls” (in our “Blogs” section).
By following these simple rules, you should be able to make much better use of recruiters, and spend much less time doing it.
