The curious case of William P. - Part 10
January 30, 2012 by Gene Nokes
The New Year has just begun and William is still on stage one, on the verge of a professional job search. I am not discouraged by this development, because his condition has improved drastically. He still wants to get back into microbiology, but his goal is modest. He wants to start by volunteering as a mentor at the local community college in the biology lab.

In terms of preparing to search for the job search, William has acquired a laptop which he uses at the local Starbucks. His Linkedin profile is updated, see http://www.linkedin.com/in/williamgpresswood. William is not that proficient in using a personal computer, although he does well using the automated cash registers at the hardware store.

William’s health has taken a dramatic turn for the better in 2011. Thanks to the VA Hospitals in our area, William now has a hearing aid which will make it much easier for him to interview and interview well. William was actually avoiding his health issues because he did not have health coverage for over 5 years. Employers are not obligated to provide health coverage for part-time employees, those working less than 20 hours a week. It is shocking how many people working in retail have little or no coverage – and most retail workers are part-time.

William has had surgery to remove a tumor from his back and had a cataract removed from one eye. He still has the other to schedule for removal. Thanks to a benefactor and a kind hearted dentist, William is getting his teeth repaired. He has quite a bit of work to be done and it may be one of the reasons that he was reluctant to interview. Let’s face it, his health had deteriorated and it is important that he feel good and good about himself in order to do a productive job search.

William is starting to express dissatisfaction over his part-time position and wants to find a volunteer position. That is a good sign. It seems that his improved health has given him some energy to focus on work that he would find more meaningful and worthy of his talent. Each step that he has taken to improve his health has had an impact on his self-esteem and improved his chances of being hired.

William’s goal is to have all his health issues resolved by the end of Q1, so he can focus on targeting community colleges that have biology labs. William turned 80 on Thanksgiving Day this past November. A part-time paying position as a microbiologist is his dream.
