Job Stats: Which Way is Really Up
December 28, 2011 by Patrice Payne
Up and down like a seesaw. That’s how the unemployment statistics seem to fluctuate from month to month; they go down from bad; up to worse. In my state of California, the jobless rate rose to 12.4% which is 3% higher than it was the same time in the prior year. But, I was curious to know the reasons behind the constant fluctuation and like magic, a special report aired on the local news. It appears those statistics may not reflect the true depth of the problem. The Real Unemployment Rate
The unemployment rate is determined by those people categorized as “looking for work” and if you include job seekers who are not one of those officially on the State’s unemployment payroll, then the number actually increases to 15-20% higher than the published rate. The U.S. Labor Department says the nationwide rate remains just below 10%; the longest length of time since the Great Depression.
Mature Workers are Active Job Seekers
I was raised by three grandparents all of whom told me there was nothing “great” about the Depression (except for the 5 cent movies). Economists believe retailers will see an increase in the coming months; some are now hiring for the holidays, so watch out young ones because older workers are not only in line to make holiday purchases for the grandkids, they’ve also got job applications in their hands, too.
There’s Always Politics
And just when you think that hope has vanished, I recently heard of a job you could have that’ll earn you a six-figure income for life. Wow! Can you guess what it is? A seat in Congress…The average term can last for over 30 years and few are actually voted out of office. Oh well, since there’s no campaign trail for me, I’ll continue looking for work like one who looks for a shoe with the perfect fit, go home and wait for someone to call back.
So, this leaves us with the same question: Do you travel along the path towards your dreams or do you travel the path towards the “Now Hiring” sign? The answer is to do what you have to do to make your job work for you; especially if you haven’t landed that dream job, yet. Would you believe I’ve heard people suggest that you abandon your dream career in favor of just working? Gasp. I say it doesn’t have to be so. In summary, I guess if you have to paddle through a river of sh-ludge, then you better have a good pair of oars!
