OEC TIP - The Interviewer Is Not Your Friend
October 10, 2011 by David Goldstein
I was speaking to one of our members last week, who is in the middle of a career transition. I spoke to him right after a phone screen, and his first words were: “I think I did well. We made a great connection, and we seemed to have a very good rapport”. This sounded alarms in my head – did he blow the interview? The idea of an interview, whether it is on the phone or in person is not to establish rapport, but to convey confidence that you are the right person to do the job.

I have interviewed and hired many people in my career. One of the first people I ever hired, about twenty five years ago was a guy that I really liked. We even wound up going to a football game together. However, after a couple of weeks, it was obvious he was incompetent at his job. I learned my lesson, and never made that mistake again.

The key thing at an interview is to establish confidence that you can do the job, you will do the job, and you won’t embarrass the person making the hiring decision. Anything else is superfluous. The right person for the job is not the person you want to play golf with or go shopping with or have a drink with. Hiring managers are notoriously risk adverse, especially in this economy.

Walking out of an interview feeling that you have gotten along great with the interviewer will make you feel good as you leave the room. Don’t be surprised if you don’t hear back. Establishing confidence is far more important. Need help learning how to establish confidence – take our workshop – “Interview With Confidence”.
