Why Won't that Head Hunter Talk to Me? - Part III
February 08, 2011 by Deb McClanahan
There is a measure of civility missing from many of our interactions today - this is just one small example. However it is a big example if you are the candidate seeking feedback and human contact. The biggest reason I need to call you back is self-interest - I will need you some day, if not today. I will be in a position some time where I want you to call me back. An article in the Jobs section of May 31, 2009's New York Times echoes this theme - "Be Nice to Job Seekers. (They're Shoppers, Too)". Jon Picoult also reminds job seekers to remember to respect candidates when they are in the hiring manager chair. So keep this in mind wherever you are in the hiring demand chain - your candidates also buy your products. Show them some respect for this reason alone, if not to demonstrate your own humanity.

Deb, I like your comments that you will call folks back and truly help candidates.

In my experience over the years most recruiters have one thing in mind and that is placing a candidate and getting paid. Recruiters have placed me and mostly the candidate is just a commodity. Also things are a little better if the recruiter is retained not contingent or a virtual recruiter.

One recruiter told me that that a general strategy used in the recruiting world was the "Goldilocks and the Tree Bears" strategy. Purposely presenting a too cool, to warm and a just right candidate! The issue is that if you are the cool or warm candidate you just don't know that.

Generally working with recruiters is both an art and a science and I think the trick is to research and qualify the folks you work with and have a thick skin.

Thanks for the 'Headhunter" topic, Nigel
