"No Care in There" for an aging parent of a job seeker
February 08, 2012 by Patrice Payne
NOTE: In today’s blog Patrice Payne shares a poem about her difficult experiences finding, and funding, good eldercare for her parent, while conducting a job search for herself.
////////////
Sometimes no matter how much careful thought, consideration and precaution you take in selecting the right elder care facility for your loved one, things can still go terribly wrong. They’re in the business to make a profit just like any other; what they really care about is money. Here is the story of my mother.
There’s no Care in There
By Patrice Payne
On a warm sunny day that ended the month of May
I got a chilling call from my favorite cousin, who was usually so bright and cheery.
But, today the news she had was so sad and dreary. She told me a story about my mom that made me want to cry. Instead I packed my bags and prepared to fly all the way to LA to find out the reason why.
Why had she gone to the emergency medical center at the request of the so-called babysitter?
I questioned the man that mom called “Companion”. Why then, did she lay rigid thinking she’d been abandoned?
I stayed afloat because there was hope and after all she was still alive. But, now the question came and never went, of how she would survive.
Medi-Cal got her in but the Medi-Care ran out so the hospital staff said, “You’ll have to make a decision soon because we need the extra bed.”
Twenty one days was all I had to find my mom another home; a place where she could be cared for by staff that would never leave her alone.
We got on a plane and flew to the town where I had come to live. I admitted her into a facility where they processed her through the system like flour through a sieve.
