HOW JAN GOT THE JOB, FOR ME!
January 20, 2012 by Patrice Payne
You all remember my good friend, Jan. Unemployed for a period of time lasting much longer than she ever wanted, she hung in there; got a job, lost a job and finally landed the job she really wanted. I think of Jan’s tenacity often and because we’re friends, I chat with her occasionally about my frustrations with unemployment.
My talent as a writer has been hidden for the most part unless you’ve been the recipient of one of my letters to a friend, or if you have been a fellow classmate in a writing workshop, or if you are a former teacher of mine. Admiration from others for my writing has been held as a secret treasure; it’s something that I have protected. I don’t consider myself an introvert, but for whatever reason, I’ve been reluctant to unleash my skills and put my writings on the table for the entire world to see. In the meantime, I continued to look for work.
CRACKED TENNIS SHOES, UNBROKEN SPIRIT
When you’re unemployed, you learn how to split a dollar four ways for almost everything you do and sometimes, even that isn’t enough to go around. So, I found a part-time job that paid minimum wage and I took it. Their dress code required me to wear black athletic shoes and because I didn’t own a pair and I knew I couldn’t afford to buy a new pair of shoes, I was unsure how I’d comply. The partner in my life became the father of ingenuity. As a lover of auto detailing, and equipped with a can of the finest black spray-paint, he came up with best idea ever and converted a $5 pair of pink and gray tennis shoes into shiny black, customized shoes for work! That brilliant strategy saved me a few dollars and lasted for several weeks.
Just when the original pink color began to peek through the cracks developing on the shoes, I got a call from Jan. She wanted to know if I’d be interested in a job, but not just any job. She wanted to know if I’d be interested in a job as a WRITER; no athletic shoes required. My answer was an astounding, “Yes!” Maintaining an air of honesty in your relationships can result in wonderful happenings. Now my dreams are out of the closet, my writing talents exposed and of course, I think I should have my partner bronze those shoes!|
