OEC Tip: Make Those Monday Morning Calls
November 30, 2011 by David Goldstein
I was speaking with one of our members the other day, and he gave the formula that he has used to keep working pretty much all the time for the last 10 years. Since he was laid off early in the dot.com bust, he has been working as a consultant. Over that period of time, he has developed contacts in many different agencies. When he gets close to the end of contract, or when he is between contracts, he uses his Monday morning strategy.

Every Monday morning, he makes a call to his contact in each agency (and he has developed a long list). This call serves several purposes. First, it keeps his name fresh in the mind of the recruiter. He also learns what new positions may be available, and by talking frequently to the recruiters, he learns what the trends are, and what areas to concentrate on.

It is getting harder and harder to get an old fashioned, full time job. Many companies now won’t hire you, unless they test drive you first as a consultant. Many of us now, must become consultants, either by choice or necessity.

Employing the Monday morning call strategy, helps you get those temporary consulting jobs. Sending in a resume to an agency just is not enough. The person that works hardest at getting the job, most likely will get it.
